#2 box
What happened to the #1 pencil?
OK I admit, its a stupid name. I struggled with this one. I wanted to work with a metal as a lining or an inlay. I tried copper; but, found it a bit too hard to manipulate into the various folds without looking tortured. I had a strip of lead flashing (I collect strange things like that) and tried it. Voila! I tried to do a pressed tin sort of detail on the top; but, it was a bit too thick for the detail. I’m glad now because the flatness contrasts so well with the cut velvet exterior with the subtle metal threads. It has gained a nice white patina in the corners. No need to mention that it’s crazy heavy. The fact that is a lead lined box does have connotations that some found unsettling; but, I see it more as an antiquarian vessel for alchemy potions, tinctures and oils. And by naming it #2 it is lent a satirical air.
