fitted lid BOXES

carpe diem

Everyone thought I was crazy when I said I was going to use Carp leather on my next box. I was perusing eBay one day and saw it. Instantly intrigued, I ordered a few ‘hides’ but had to wait for them to arrive before starting the substrate as I had no idea how large they would be. I had hoped to make him taller (to look more ‘fishy’). However, the skins tapered too severely and I didn’t want to patch in sections. Matching the scale pattern would have been impossible anyway. So, he is a stout little guy and I just love him. The tactile aspect of the hide is really cool and the fabric interior subtly hints back to the exterior’s watery origins.

It was late fall and everything was gloomy. I wasn’t in the best state of mind at the time. So many negative things were happening in the world and I had just heard that the bee hive I had removed and relocated from one of my front porch columns had apparently split. Half following a new queen and the rest staying behind and dying. I am very much a bee advocate, and this really upset me. The black, white and golden theme was deliberate as was the fabric interior. While the Caroline Cecil fabric is of leaves, it reminded me a bit of bee wings too. I donated this box to a charity auction. As adorable as it turned out, it made me sad to look at. I hope it made them a few dollars.

THE (WEDDING) FIRST ANNIVERSARY PRESENT - The first ever boxes I made were many moons ago. At that time I worked with two awesome women who, like myself, were in a state of transition. They both have since found the loves of their lives, and I am so happy for them both, although I haven’t seen either of them in person since those days. (thank you social media for keeping us connected). When Jesse got married, neither myself nor Leslie could make it. So, Leslie bought the materials and I made the box using colors that the couple loved. It was the first fitted lid box I’d made. OK, so it was about a year late; but, hey they knew it was coming and arrived for their first anniversary!
